TFTA Campaigns
During the TFTA Campaign weekend, participants from all over the North West came together to examine further many of the ideas and objectives they had explored during the Inquiries. They agreed and settled on the four main subject areas below, which they'd like to campaign on.
After choosing the subjects, participants then drew up some actions to go with them. These campaign actions, listed below, will serve as the first steps towards their ultimate campaign aim of securing a healthy food environment for all.
Take Aways
Aim: Reduce the contribution of take aways to unhealthy eating in the North West
1) Stop more take aways opening by changing planning regulations within local authority areas
Harness the powers available to local authorities to change rules so that applications for new take aways can be easily refused if local residents don't want it.
2) Launch a petition calling on politicians to change planning rules to stop more take aways opening
People power to change planning rules around take aways. This petition will seek as many signatures as possible from around the North West.
Junk food advertising
Aim: Ban junk food advertising targeted at children and young people
1) Call on the government to stop junk food adverts aimed at children
Campaign and join with other campaigners to stop junk food advertising to children and young people - including adverts on television, radio and the internet.
Adult and community education
Aim: Increase access to healthy food education for adults and communities
1) Enlist your local MP to influence government policy
Participants want to see greater provision of healthy cooking education for adults and the community in general. Enlist your local members of parliament to make this happen.
2) Set up a Facebook page to act as a hub for Food Education campaign work
Get involved and find out what other people are campaigning on through the power of social networking.
School Education
Aim: to ensure that locally, and then nationally, secondary schools include healthy cooking lessons in their curriculum
1) Contact local schools and get them to tell us about cooking lessons that take place in their school at present
Help to create an audit of cooking education in the North West
2) Create a film with young people from Oldham highlighting the importance of school cooking lessons
This work will be undertaken by young people from Oldham, supported by our partners the North West Regional Youth Work Unit. The film will be shown to schools around the region to support healthy food classroom time.
